Joseph Di-mond
Joseph was born in Dunkeswell in 1824. The Baptism record below is for 28th March 1824. Josephs parents are down as John and Betty (which is an abbreviation of Elizabeth). Interestingly, John's brother William had a son a year before and named him Joseph also!
Here he is at 16, on his mom and dads 1841 Census record.
Sarah was a widow. She could clearly read and write as her signature suggests and she was about 17 years Joseph's senior!
She was baptised as Sarah Cox on Aug 29th 1807. Her parents were James and Susanna.
On the 16th December 1845, Joseph married Sarah
Dommett at Dunkeswell Parish Church.

In 2021, I was sent an email by Jane Moody, who was researching her cottage in Dunkeswell, heres what she said...

On the 26th Feb 1836, Sarah married Enoch Dommett at Dunkeswell
On June 1837, their son Enoch was born. Sadly the next couple of years proved to be harsh for Sarah. For she lost little baby Enoch. She conceived the following year again naming the baby Enoch.
On November the 10th 1839 Sarah's husband Enoch passed away. She must have been devastated. Within 2 years, she'd had her 1st baby, and he'd passed away. Then she'd had another baby the following year and then lost her husband 4months later..
She was left a widow with a son, without his father..
By the 1841 Census, Sarah was 33, little Enoch was 2 and amongst others she had her father James Cox living with her. He was 88 and is recorded as 'Pauper'!
By the 1851 Census, Sarah had married Joseph. Enoch was 11 and my dads Great Grandad Joseph was 1 year old..
Sarah was now 43 and Joseph 27.
(In the days of large families, its possible that Sarah had health issues with regards to fertility)..
This is young Joseph's Baptism record the following year.
This is the 1871 Census. Joseph is now 47, Sarah is 63. Enoch at the time was visiting a nearby property while Joseph (21) went off to North Petherton to marry Elizabeth Thresher..(see next page)

By the 1861 Census, Joseph was 37, Sarah was 53 and was Dressmaking. 21 year old Enoch was still at home. And dads Great Grandad Joseph was now 10. The address is down as Dimonds Cottage.

By the 1881 Census something had changed. Sarah was 74 and living alone with her son Enoch at Dunkeswell. It suggests that Joseph and Sarah had separated and that he'd moved to Wales. Joseph had clearly met someone else as the 1891 Census for him suggests at Pontypridd!
The record is not very legible so ive highlighted their names below. This was to be Sarahs last Census. She passed at the age of 80 in 1888. (the local paper states she was 82)

This is the 1891 Census for Joseph Dymond at Pontypridd. It states that he is married to Fanny Dymond, although I could not find any record. Its possible they were just living together at the time. Joseph was now 67.
At the time they were living at Lilliput cottage, near Nantgarw (between Caerphilly and Pontypridd)
I did find this article that happened 2 years before the above Census of a Fanny Diamond. The address is only a few miles from the above.
Although there doesnt appear to be a marriage record for Fanny and Joseph, there is a death record! Fanny passed away in the 1st quarter of 1896. Her age is given as 57.(although this age is inconsistent with the above record of 46.)
But Joseph did re-marry in 1897 at 73.
He married 51 year old Jane Dobbs  from
Hereford on the 21st October. He moved
to Castle Street in the next village along
from Nantgarw called Taffs Well. Below
is his final Census in 1901...
Joseph and Jane lived here at No 3 Castle Street..
The map below shows the location of where they lived - No 3 Castle Street in Taffs Well.
This article shows  Joseph appearing at court for poaching. He was caught near Taffs well Police Station.

Taffs Well Police Station.

Joseph passed away on 5th March 1906 at the age of 83 the cause of Death is down as Senile Decay and Dropsy (old word for some form of Odema (fluid build up).His son Joseph registered the death. Strangely a few months later Jane (60) passed away too!!

Joseph was buried at Eglwysilan Church on March 8th 1906
