Ive kept the following information from my research in 2016...its relevant as it charts Williams family line from above, and it illustrates how its easy to follow a wrong family member

Researching this family tree has certainly thrown a few curve balls now and then. Because most of the families named their children after either themselves or family members, they tended to have the same names in each sibling family. While researching in June 2016, I came across a record that made me realise I'd been researching the wrong family member, which has meant altering the information completely on the next couple of pages.  This page is about William and the next 2 pages were of his son William and his Grandson William to follow the family line to get to my dads Great Grandad Joseph. So rather than discard all the information of those 2 pages, I've extended this page to include those family members....

These are the Parish records for the reading of the Banns and Marriage of William (1783 Dunkeswell - 1866 Honiton) to Sarah Letton (1782 Offwell - 1866 Honiton).

They were married at Offwell church on the 27th March 1810 when William was 26 and Sarah 28.

William and Sarah started a family in 1810 with the birth of Sarah in 1810 at Dunkeswell.

2 years later came Mary.

Then Elizabeth in 1815 and its interesting to see DIAMOND

spelled as DIAMOND!

Below is the 1841 Census in Dunkeswell Village. William was now 57 and his occupation was Carpenter. Sarah was 58.

7 years after they were married, their son William was born in the Parish of Dunkeswell. This is the baptism record from the 12th October 1817.

Williams trade of the time is logged as Carpenter.

In 1841 the 1st real Census was done for

the whole of Britain. Before 1911 Census's

were done by street or groups of houses.

After 1911 they became individual houses

only. This record shows William Di-mond

at 22. He was residing at Cannon-Fee

Tything,(Tything refers to the area being

dividedup into 1/10s) in the town of

Crediton. This is about 8 miles N.W. of Exeter.

The town was basically one street and was divided into East and West sides. The record states he was East Side Exeter Road.

His occupation appears to be Shoe Mender/Maker and he is living with maybe an Aunt Ann (60) and maybe his cousin Henry (27). They are stated as being Agricultural Labourers.

In the 3rd quarter of 1843 William married Elizabeth Hodder at Broadhembury, Devon.

This is a map of Broadhembury from the 1880s. William and Elizabeth were married at St Andrews Church and lived in the village.

It is interesting to note that Elizabeths father's occupation is 'Shoemaker'. This appears to be the same as Williams in the 1841 Census. So perhaps William was learning the trade from his future father in law?

William and Elizabeth had their 1st child in  October that year at Broadhembury as these records show.

They named him William.

1851 Census: 10 years on William(32) and his wife Elizabeth(28) were living in the Devonshire village of Dunkeswell, just north of Honiton. They had extended their family and Joseph age 3 , was born along with brothers William and James and sister Sarah.

Interestingly it appears that he lived next to another family relation James Di-mond and his family. They all seemed to work the land as Agricultural Labourers.

This is the baptism record for Joseph on September 2nd 1847.

This is the Baptism record of Josephs younger sister Sarah. Note also her cousin Lydia born to James and Elizabeth from the 1851 Census is on this record!

Finally from the 1851 Census was William and Elizabeths son James, born in 1850. And again more cousins are recorded on this record. It appears James and Elizabeth had twins! Mary and Martha.

The village of Dunkeswell looking from Percy Hill

Tencery Farm is no longer a farm it has been converted to separate dwellings. Left is the old farm house. Right is the converted Barns on 14. Aug 2015.

Census's were records of who was present in the location at the time.

This is the Census of 1861 and it shows young Joseph Di-mond (12yrs).

He was still living with his dad William, but was employed as a House Servant at nearby Tencery Farm on the outskirts of Dunkeswell.

This is the Census of the same year for the rest of the family. At the time they were residing at Millpond cottage in Dunkeswell.(One of the cottages around the Millpond).

By the 1871 Census, William and Elizabeth were entering Middle Age. Joseph was now 23. All other family members had left home, and Joseph had a younger sister Ann who was 10. Both William and his son were Agricultural Labourers.

These are the 1881 & 1891 Census for William and Elizabeth Di-mond. By this time they had moved to Foundry Yard, Honiton. The 1881 Census records that they had their Granddaughter Elizabeth (8yrs)staying with them.

X

This 1891 was the last Census of William and Elizabeth Di-mond. By now William was 75 and Elizabeth 71. This record still suggests he was working as a labourer.

Foundry Yard, Just off the High Street, Honiton

This was the site of the old Iron Foundry in Honiton. This is where William and Elizabeth moved to from Dunkeswell between 1871 and 1881.

William passed away in 1893 and was buried on May 22nd. Although his age is recorded as 74, this is inconsistent with his baptism record of 1817 and the 1891 Census which records his age as 75! So it is more likely that his true age was closer to 77!

On a visit to Honiton on 14 Aug 2015, we looked for Williams Grave at the Parish Church. Unfortunately we didn't find anything as lots of the older graves were either overgrown or words faded. Its most likely that a headstone was too expensive.

The Shop in 2015!

But what is evident in Honiton is that Di-mond is a popular name as this 1930s photo shows. The high street store owned by Dimond and Co. Its been there since 1888 and is still a stationers today!

I spoke to the current owner, he said his name was pronounced DIAMOND! He asked me if i was a Diamond with an 'I' or an 'A'!

He said there were lots of Diamonds around the Honiton area!
